Chassis #2
This car will be the Boxcab locomotive. It is far more to scale than the first car. It is a steel frame car, ladder design, and has masonite side panels. The roof will be wood, so you can ride on it. The windows and door frames are steel.
The longitudinals on this car are 1" X 2" X 1/8" steel tube. I purchased this from a local steel supplier in a cut 20' length. the end cross beams are the same !' X 2", with the center cross beams made from 2" X 3" x 1/8" steel. We bought this in error, we wanted ! X 3. But, since we had it, we used it. The uprights for the body are 1-1/4 X 1-1/4 X 1/8 angle. The top support is 1 X 1 X 1/8 angle. The lower body panel supports are the 1-1/4 angle All of the window and door frames are 1/4" steel bar, screwed or pop-riveted in place. This car will use express type trucks from Real Trains, with a 1 HP 24vdc motor on one truck, and air brakes on the other truck. I am not sure of the crossbeam and drawbar arrangement until I get the motor/truck assembly. Couplers will be Tom Bee. The car will carry either 2 or 4 12 volt marine duty batteries. The speed control will come from a supplier not yet selected. I will utilize a 12vdc air compressor, an air storage tank, an air whistle, and a bell. The size of this car body will be 16" wide, 45" long, and 14 " high. It will be identified as Ingersoll-Rand #91, and be painted in a semi gloss black paint.
And, thanks to Chuck, my neighbor, for finding a number new but unsed deep cycle batteries in the back room where he works, and getting them for me!
